Shell Shock : The Play : At Cambridge 30th June

Shell Shock is one soldier’s story of coping with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  After serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, Tommy Atkins’ observations on life on civvy street are poignant, frequently comic and always moving. His over-emotional responses to post office queues, a trip to Ikea, his relationships and family lead to alienation and anger.

Nearest play to Carver is on Friday 30th June at the Mumford Theatre in Cambridge.

Rowney Woods : Bird Ringing

Last year the Upper Cam Ringing Group were granted permission to install nestboxes and ring birds in Rowney Woods. We installed 180 nestboxes throughout the woods. These boxes had a high occupancy level (>90%) and low predation levels -only 4 boxes were predated.

This year we installed another 50 boxes.

The song birds started nesting one week earlier than last year. A larger proportion of these were one year old birds compared to last year. We know this because many of the birds we caught in boxes had rings on which, when typed into the database, told us how old the bird was and, in some cases, which nestbox they were born in.

Average clutch sizes were similar to last year but overall occupancy levels were down, suggesting that optimum box density has probably been reached. Great tit clutch sizes were up with one clutch at 12. We found a clutch of 17 blue tit chicks in another box. In total we ringed just under 1,200 nestlings this year, with the majority being blue tits.

Please get in touch if you see or find a ringed bird, we are keen to find out where these birds are going once they leave the woods.

If you would like to know more about bird ringing in this area you can contact us by email on: uppercamrg@gmail.com
